Hair Care: Washing & Conditioning Sew-in Extensions

Hey my beauty chameleons, if you follow me on youtube then you already have seen my video on how I care for my hair when I am wearing extensions/weave that have been sewn-in. Many subscribers of mine have been requesting a video on how I get my Milky Way’s Saga Gold Premium Yaky Remi hair weave to last so long without the matting and tangling. I honestly don’t do anything special, but following my hair care regime. For my weekly wash I use the following items:

So, overall I am not a professional hair stylist my any means. I just read books that educate and ask my stylist lots of questions too and I recommend you do the same because everyone’s hair is different. Anyway, if you would like to see my process on me using the items mentioned above feel free to watch my tutorial provided below.

Thank you for posting this video. I currently have a 10 and 12 inch in my hair and I have had it fo approximately six weeks now. I can say that I do love the hair but it has been tangling. The tangles come out easily with a quick brush.

I will definitely get this hair again but I am going for the 10 inch. I find that my real hair blends extremely well and I really have no complaints about this hair. I am going to purchase the products you have recommended to use.

I love your site. Thanks again.

Anytime! I am glad that this info was helpful. I still have the same hair in after 2 months now. I will have them taken out to get a thorough cleanse and put back in, unless I decide to splurge on the hair!

  2. Niecie says:

Do u still have the same hair in now????

    • Natasha says:

It’s funny you asked! I just removed it two weeks ago and go new hair. I kept the old hair so if I would like to re-wear the style I have it. But I did purchase new hair, same brand, and had my stylist create a longer version. So if you watched my latest youtube video I was wearing the new hair. I wanted to purchase some indian hair, but $$$$ yikes! We will see though, lol ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. likisha says:

how often do you wash the hair

    • Natasha says:

I was my hair 1-2 times a week depending on how much product build it i get on my hair.

  4. Natasha makes a good point here. The amount of product you use will slowly build up over the week and you will therefore need to wash it more often the more hair products you use. Just make sure your shampoo is mild but will really clean off all the hair styling products though otherwise it will again build up leaving you with a tired and lack luster appearance.

  5. I was wondering, I just got my extensions put in and my stylist told me not to wash them, and to have them professionally washed….can I just wash them myself?
The hair is Yaki hair, bu Onnyx Essence?

    • Natasha says:

I am sure you can? i would ask her what products she recommend with the hair! I always wash my own extensions to save a little extra $$$ for makeup, lol.

  6. Rebecca says:

I was wondering if you do this everyday? if not what what to you do to your hair everyday at a reg basics.

    • Natasha says:

I don’t wash my hair everyday! Only 1-2 times a week. The products I do use on a regular depending on the condition of my hair and the extensions.

Depending on how dry my hair gets daily I will spritz my hair and the extension with water to hydrate it. I keep a spritz bottle filled with fresh water
Next I will moisturize my hair (real hair) with the olive oil moisturizing lotion again depending how dry my hair is (2-3 days a week)
I will seal my hair and ends with Kera Cares Essential oils (very little) (2-3 days a week)

As far as styling products I will use ampro styling gel with protein to lay my sides down For curling my hair I will use either TreSemme curl activator or Living Proof wave shaping. The if a need a holding spray I will used Garnier Fructise Anti Frizz holding spray.

      I hope this helps!

    Hey Natasha,
I got my first sew in last thursday after going 7wks since my perm (im thinking of going natural but not sure yet).
I am ready to wash my hair because it smells and itches but I dont know how too.
I have a braids and curly fro like hair style with cornrows in the front and Twinpeak Wet and Wave Jerry curls in the back.
Could you please explain to me how to wash it and take care of it correctly and keep it looking good while keeping my real hair healthy too?
Also the person who did it says it can last for 1-3months,is this true?  I was just thinking of only keeping it in for a month or so,what do you think?

    • Natasha says:

Veronica, the person is correct. If you have good quality here is should last 3 months, but definitely give your hair a break after 3 months too.

  8. I have the preimum hair…bout 18inchs long…would all those same products work for my hair aw well? If not what would you suggest

  9. I’m wearing a brand calld permium hair…its bout 18inchs long…and I just wantd to know if I cud use the same products you used…or if there should be something else I should use for this brand

    • Natasha says:

I have never worn that hair brand before. When it comes to hair care it is all by trial and error. Try them and see how your hair response to it and the extension too. Mostly likely you will be okay ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Terri says:

Thanks so much for your videos about how to care for your extensions. They are so informative. I'm looking forward to getting mine done & purchasing the products you recommend. I was wondering what is the price range I should expect to pay for a stylist to put the extensions in all over like yours?

  11. Michelle says:

    Hey Natasha,
I love all the advice you give on up keep on sew ins. I've only had my 12inch sew in (Saga Remy Hair) for 2 weeks. I really need to wash it because it itches and the weave is becoming a lil dry and tangled. Do i have to have a hair dryer to sit under or can i blow dry the weave??

    Thanks

    • Natasha says:

      Hi Michelle,

Definitely wash your hair. I was mine 1-2 times a week because the hair can become weighed down with product and oils from you scalp. Yes you can blow dry the weave just also try to blow dry your braided hair too so you don’t get and mold or matting from too much moisture.

  12. Leslie says:

Thank you so much for your web site and Youtube videos.  You are a blessing.  Your hair looks fabulous.  I found you right before getting my new hair extentions.  I've spents thousands of dollars on hair and some hair just napped up really quick. I've been wearing extenstions for 2 years and I was never really satisfied with the hair unless I spent over $300 for the hair and it would last 2-3 months when washed and reused.  But in 2011 I refuse to spend that much on hair. I took your advice and purchased the MilkyWay hair.  I purchased the Saga Silver Virgin Yaky 10" and Iove it.  The woman in the hair store said Silver was a little better quality than the Gold.  It was $20 more a pack, total spent $120 for 2 packs.  I was very frustrated with my hair extensions, but believe with your videos I will learn how to take care of my hair better.  This is week one of my new hair.  I plan to sit under the dryer to dry it to prevent matting and drying out.  Once again thank you!!!

  13. Martinique Kennedy says:

Thank you sooooo much for doing this video …..I normally go to the Salon to get extentions washed you saved me time and money!!!!  Thank You and keep up the good work …

    • Natasha says:

Thanks! I am glad that this helps you save some money! I am all about that right now ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Karen says:

Hi Natasha,  I love your tutorials!  I have the remy gold yaki installed, washed it for the first time following your instructions, it did not come out as straight as it was in the beginning.  What else can I do to make it straight.  Also when I flat iron it my hair has a burning smell? Help me please.

    • Natasha says:

      Hi karen!

Let me ask you a few questions:

      1. What type of shampoo and conditioners/or leave conditioners are you using on the hair?
      2. Are you using a heat protectent spray on the hair before flar ironing the hair?
      3. What type of flat iron are you using on the hair? How old is it? And, if the coating on the plats still in good condition or is the protectant coating on the plates gone? the reason why I ask if you have old plates and the metal is showing you can burn the hair too.
      4. How high of heat are you putting on the hair? If it is too hot for the hair texture you will burn the hair.

Let me know because I have never burn my hair unless the heat on my iron was too high. I hope this helps. Let me know.

  15. Hi! I just got a new sew in it was sewn into a net how do I get moisture to my scalp through the net…. what products would u recommend?

  16. How long should you wait between sew ins? also how do you reccommend putting the moisturizer products in your hair when you have a weaving net on?

  17. Tiana says:

Hi, I wanted to know how long your hair is, and what's the CHEAPEST best hair to get for a 18 year old for prom, which is this saturday. I know for a fact I want the hair to be long and curly and NOT tangled

  18. ashley k. says:

Hey I have glued in my tracks but I have milky way and it tangles up quite a bit…how do I wash it and what do I use to get it back to its fresh out the bag look again!!!!

    • Natasha says:

It is going to be a challenge to wash it knowing that your tracks are glued in. You may try washing the hair, but make sure not to get water too close to your tracks otherwise it will come out.

  19. Kiana says:

Hi I have a question about washing a sew in weave. I have a remy deep wave sew in that I have had for two months. I have washed it because I do not want to over do it. So how often should I wash it? I love the hair and it tangles sometimes. When that happens I just spray warm water on it and detangle it by hand. Is there a simpler way or a dentangler that I should use to stop this? Also do you recommend a leave in conditioner following the wash. Thank you for your help. ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. hi,
umm i have the remi brazillian wavy hair weave on right now. I washed it once and since the it's been tangling and matting even after olling it , conditioning it and putting in heat defence. When i washed it, it was really tangled- loads of hair came out. Right now it's not silky and it doesn't lie flat anymore. I got the weave in september. Please HELP i don't know what to do to get it back to normal

  21. Layla says:

hey Natasha, im going to be getting my hair done on staurday for my birthday but the hair i ordered is curly and when it came in the package it was wavy from being packaged for so long, so i was wondering would it be okay to wash the hair before getting it installed but keep it tied up in the bundle?

    • Natasha says:

I always wash my hair before installing it. Definitely keep it in the bundle to make your washing process much easier ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Danielle says:

Thanks so much for the video … I’m currently getting ready to install Peruvian wavy hair & wanted it to last a bit longer than my last installment of signature classy straight hair … & this has Been the most helpful video I’ve come across … I’ll be going to sallys to try out a few products you use .. Thanks ????

  23. Mechelle says:

I got the India Rhemi Afro Jerry Curle weave a week ago but having difficulty tieing it down at night. I usually use a stocking cap covered with a satin bonnet but the hair in the back and sides end up tangled. Do you have a better solution?

  24. Harmony says:

Im not sure if you still check this but , I did exactly everything you said but still an hour after I straighten my hair , it kinda matted up in the back :(. Iv only had the hair for 3-4 weeks now . And I don’t really wanna change it .

    • Natasha says:

      Hi Harmony,

I am not too sure what you can do. I know my stylist told me that at times you could have purchased a bad batch of hair. Think about not every batch of hair will be the hair since it is human hair from a human donor. Also the other thing that I have learned about beauty supply hair is that it seems like the life of the hair only last 3-4 weeks on brands like saga, femi collection and milky way hair at least that is my experience. So, now I am very selective about the hair I purchase now. I really like halleys curls salon relaxed or virgin malaysian hair or indian hair company’s hair. They seem to last much longer and do not have the severe tangling like the beauty supply brands I have named.
